I want to tell you a story about a young man that I met 29 years ago. His name is Juan Ramirez. I met Juan in Mexicali, Mexico in 1973. Juan was the boyfriend of a young girl who was a member of the church I pastored. She stated he had a very hard life. He was abandoned by his father when he was 8 years old. He stated that he missed his father and blamed God for his father leaving.
I went to visit him in Mexico at the urging of his girlfriend because she stated that he was a drug addict and heavily involved in gangs. She stated at the age of 13 he joined the gang and began to smoke cigarettes, marijuana, snort cocaine and also do Crystal meth.
When I met Juan, he was a very hard young man that didn’t want to hear anything about God. I told him that God loves him very much and this is not the life that he should have. He wasn’t disrespectful but he did not want to hear what I had to say. I told him that I would continue to pray for him and God was not going to let him go. Sometime later trying to pass drugs and entering in the United States illegally Juan was arrested and sent to jail for approximately a year and a half in Calexico, Mexico. When I learned about his detention I sent him a letter and in the letter I once again told him how the Lord God loved him. He stated one thing that really stuck out in the letter was the scripture I quoted from the Gospel of Luke 11:13 which said if we’re being evil knowing how to give good gifts to our children how much more has a heavenly Father wants to give us good gifts.
When he was released from prison he was back-and-forth still involved in drugs and the gang. At some point in time the Holy Spirit using the Word of God and my persistence brought Juan to a point where he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ. He is now a minister with Victory Outreach and Mexicali, Mexico.
Juan stated about three weeks ago he began thinking about me and he still had the letter. He decided to Google my name and we made contact With one another. He stated that my encouragement and giving him the love of Christ and as well as the letter that I wrote 29 years ago is what helped him come to the saving knowledge of Jesus. I want to let you know that the Word of God never returns void. It does not matter if you don’t see instant success when preaching the word. This is a lesson in loving someone into the kingdom of God and seeing the Holy Spirit use His word to change their lives.

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We have some great news! The Lord has opened up two more prisons to us to reach young men who are desperately in need of repentance and having an abundant life in Jesus. My wife and I will be serving as volunteer chaplains to about 200 inmates overall in both facilities. We will be conducting general worship services as well as a weekly Bible study in both Spanish and English. We are asking everyone to pray of how you might be able to partner with us in supplying material to these men. We have to make copies of our Bible Studies, purchase literature and Bibles. This is a reference letter for Dr. Timothy Emerick. Dr. Emerick served in our church as a teacher and counselor for a period of two years. As a psychologist he always stated that psychology can show us the problem but only Jesus can heal it.

In his time of service, he assisted the pastoral staff to resolve pressing issues with church members including but not limited to doctrine and individual and family counseling. He ministered with great insight and power demonstrating the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Dr. Emerick served with great love and enthusiasm and proved to be a vital part of our church family. He served with integrity for the body of Christ. He is bilingual in English and Spanish. He is fluent in both.

Greetings from Cancun, Mexico. Our names are Rodolfo and Isabell Ruz. We accepted the Lord with Dr. Emerick about a month ago and we also attend the Bible Institute. It’s been a tremendous blessing because he has ministered to our whole family and did the funeral service for my mother-in-law this last week.

This is Jeffery Bivens. I met him in Tehachapi State Prison 2017. He took several of my classes and received A’s. I helped Mr. Bivens in writing to the parole board for his release. He was released on parole 2019. He and his wife listen to the teachings on YouTube every morning to start their day. He is working every day and loving his freedom in Jesus!

This is a pic of Lakeshia and Will Palmer. I met Will at Lancaster California State Prison. He took several of my classes and did very well. I wrote to the parole board on his behalf petition him to be released on parole. He was released in March 2020. He and his wife are part of the Bible Institute and enjoy the teachings on YouTube.

Dr. Timothy Emerick

Dr. Emerick asked me a week ago if I could write a short essay on how he helped me during his professorship at Lancaster State Prison. Knowing Dr. Emerick well, I am absolutely sure he thinks that I am procrastinating and this chaps his hide. But Dr. Emerick is a man of patience so I just wanna thank him for waiting for this brief essay. What Dr. Emerick doesn’t know is there is more to my procrastination than meets the eye. To be bluntly honest, the praises that this incredible man deserves can’t possibly be described in just a short essay, and I am just having a hard time figuring how to go about it. But, as Dr. Emerick has willed me and my fellow students to succeed, I will do my best. 

To understand the true depth of how this man has assisted me, it would be imperative to tell a short bio of my life and how our lives crossed paths. In 1994, on the night of my 20th birthday, I was at a scene of a murder that I had no intention of being a part of. Being a scared young man, I ran and hid from the world trying my best to believe that this moment in time did not happen. But the world does not work that way. I was soon arrested with three other young men that was at the scene, including the man that actually did the shooting, and after two years fighting the case we were convicted of first degree murder with special circumstances. We were sentenced to die in prison with Life Without the Possibility of Parole which meant that unless a miracle happened I would die in prison. Dr. Emerick was this miracle.

Before my incarceration I was a man of faith, but my faith was shaken when I felt I was unjustly sentenced by our legal system. As most men do when imprisoned they find peace and solace in knowing that there is more to life than this material world. Regardless, I had faith that one day I would be walking out those concrete walls and entering back into society but I did not know how this would happen. The only thing that I had total control of while being incarcerated was becoming a better person growing spiritually each and every day.

Fast forward 20 years… Lancaster State Prison started an in-person college program through Antelope Valley Prison and I signed up because I wanted to prove that I was capable of being more than what most people on the outside believed about prisoners. That is how I met Dr. Emerick. The first class Dr. Emerick taught was Introduction to Psychology. On the first day after he introduced himself to us, he asked the question “ What is the difference between a Psychopath and a Sociopath? “ Even though both words sound so horrifying in describing an individual, he clearly explained that we all had the ability to change and become a better person than how society viewed us. With these words explained, Dr. Emerick inspired in us Hope and the ability to allow us to make clear choices. Dr. Emerick brought humor to our classes and allowed us to talk freely and openly without judgement. It was the first time where all of us felt that our opinions and voices mattered…that we mattered. Most of us men lived daily in our past traumas. Dr. Emerick taught us to transfer beyond those traumas and that we are not chained to our past deeds. We had the ability to move on as long as we were willing to move on.

I believe that most people are waiting for God to reach through the heavens and pick us up from our troubles. But God says that he uses other men to help other men through him. In 2018, Governor Jerry Brown, another man of faith, was using his executive powers to give men and women that were incarcerated Commutations and Clemency to individuals that showed exceptional changes while incarcerated. I approached Dr. Emerick and asked if he could write a support letter for me to attach to my commutation application. To this day, even though I was an exemplary model prisoner of 25 years with dozens of support letters by friends, family and organizations, I truly believe that the support letter from Dr. Emerick with his particular background was the spark that led to my commutation of sentence and ultimately my freedom. To say it was a miracle is scratching the surface. I was the last commutation interview by Governor Brown before he left office and I was the last person commuted by him on Christmas Eve 2018. Given a chance to prove my worth as a human being, the commutation afforded me a chance to go in front of the Board of Parole. After being found suitable for Parole, I was released on December 4, 2019. None of this could of happened without God putting Dr. Emerick in the path of my life. In life we have choices and there is destiny. Sometimes they intertwine and great things happen. 

I wanna apologize to Dr. Emerick for taking so long to write this essay. But as you can tell, he deserves more than these few paragraphs could explain. I love you Dr. Emerick. All of us that were in your classes are forever indebted to you. We may not all be physically free from bondage but you have helped us free ourselves from spiritual and mental bondage.

Hello beloved. My name is Alphonso Ross Bass Jr. You can call me AJ. I have been a Christian and baptized in the faith since I was 11. My family has believed in God ever since I was born. I have been practically raised in the church throughout my whole life. Although I have called myself a Christian most of my life, one could say I definitely was not living the life as a true image-bearer of His Son. I considered myself a ‘dead’ Christian until I was 27. I truly had an identity problem with myself as to who I was in Him and my relationship with my Savior was utterly absent. There was much misery and confusion for myself growing up because deep down I did not want to admit I was not spiritually rooted in the one true faith.

I had deeply struggled with smoking weed, looking at women lustfully, being sexually immoral and looking at pornography. I had also been in unequally yoked relationship with a non-believer and that did not help my faith and walk with God as either. I was always too prideful to repent ever.

Thankfully through the Father’s mercy and grace, He had revived me through His son Jesus Christ after I had prayed a sincere biblical prayer to Him. (Psalm 51) I humbly came to the Father with a contrite, repenting heart and He immediately poured the Holy Spirit back into my spirit. It was at a time when I was listening to a couple of sermons from Dr Timothy Emerick where I knew it was God speaking directly to me. I felt the conviction within my heart, and the burning sensation for Jesus and I knew it was Him.

After that, reading His word became easier to read and clear to me about the Father’s will. Started to understand who God truly is and the love He has for everyone that truly wants to come to know Him. I am now a full believer in my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
