The Pentecostal Experience- Holy Spirit’s Indwelling in Believers.
Part 2.
Introduction.
One of the central truths of the evidence of the Holy Spirit and dwelling and believers is speaking in tongues. This physical evidence of a spiritual experience is convincing proof that believers have, and did receive the infilling or fulness of the Holy Spirit apart from being born again. The Lord Jesus Christ, his apostles to tarry and wait for the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Jesus ascended to heave and the Holy Spirt descended upon believers so they would receive power from on high.
And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” 6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:4-8.
The Coming of the Holy Spirit
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all in one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
The Crowd’s Response
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?” 13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.” Acts 2:1-13.
Manifestation of Speaking in Tongues
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. 45 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. 46 For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Acts 10:44-46.
The above example of Peter preaching the Word of God after his dramatic vision of the sheet, filled with all man of unclean beasts being let down from heaven, was guided to the house, Cornelius, a Gentile, to proclaim God ‘s salvation through Jesus Christ. As Peter spoke to Cornelius and his household regarding the remissions of sins for the blood of Jesus the Holy Spirit fell on all of those people there, and they spoke with other tongues.
And as I (Peter) began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?” 18 When they heard these things, they became silent; and they glorified God, saying, “Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life.” Acts 11:15-18.
Please take notice that the speaking of tongues convinced the Jewish brethren, at Jerusalem, that the gentiles also received the gift of the Holy Spirit at the time of salvation. It’s been my experience that this is the best time that people should be filled with the Holy Spirit has when they’re born again. There is no suggestion here that the gentiles Christians had to wait to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
The Apostle Paul at Ephesus.
And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? So, they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So, they said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus. 5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
Here yet is another example of the Gentile believers receiving the infill of the Holy Spirit. These men were all new converse, and had been followers of John the Baptist. They believe John ‘s message when Paul came to them and told him that Jesus Christ was a promised one, they had died on the cross, and been resurrected they should believe on him, and be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. The Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with other tongues and prophesied.
I have seen this happen in my own personal ministry, where people who have received the Holy Ghost, and began to speak in tongues, and in prophesy. One time when I first came to the Lord, I was attending a meeting with the Catholic charismatic renewal, called the city of Angels, I was in a gathering with about 500 people in a very large building. A man stood up and began to prophesy in tongues, and I immediately received the interpretation of this message. However, I was such a young believer. I was quite timid and sharing this the leader of the meeting said that they would not do anything else until the person who received the interpretation shared the message. I must have waited for at least 20 minutes, and I walked up to the leader and told him that I had received the interpretation of the tongues presented. I told him what the message was and he had me stand up in front of this entire crowd and give the interpretation. Wow what a surprise and blessing!
The Door to Spiritual Gifts.
In the study of the scriptures, we have seen that speaking with tongues is the initial and supernatural, sign or evidence of the Holy Spirit in dwelling. Speaking with tongues is the doorway to receiving spiritual gifts. I found my own life the more I pray, and worship God, in tongues, the more manifestations I’ve seen other gifts of the spirit take place, some people say they’re only interested in the other gifts of the spirit, yet not in the speaking in tongues for fear of ridicule. But we must understand that the Holy Spirit is a giver of all gifts, and we are told to seek them earnestly. In the Corinthian Church there, was an abundance of speaking with tongues. Everybody was speaking in tongues and there was no interpretation so Paul told them they’re the only two or three should speak in tongues and another should interpret the interpreter should not be pressed for an interpretation but she kept silent in the church until it came forth I Corinthians 14:27-28. I have seen in Pentecostal churches that sometimes people get very excited and don’t follow orders. But Paul said in I Corinthians 14:18-19.
Just because some people act out of order within church, we should blame God or resist the speaking in tongues. Once again, we are told to desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit and He will manifest them as he will.
